Nordic Pole Walking Study

A study through the University of Ontario Institute of Technology is being conducted to investigate the effects of Nordic pole walking on the physical function and quality of life of individuals with prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer, and non-small cell lung cancer. Participants are currently being recruited from all over the Greater Toronto and Oshawa area.
In this 8-week study volunteers are asked to participate in 1 group Nordic pole walking session per week and to walk with the poles 3 additional times per week independently. The Nordic pole walking program is tailored to the individual needs and ability of each participant. Assessments of the physical function and quality of life of each participant are conducted before and after the 8-week period. The study is being conducted under the guidance and supervision of a Registered Kinesiologist.
Participants interested in the study must meet the following criteria:
  • 55 years of age or older
  • primary diagnosis of histologically confirmed stage I-IV non-small cell lung cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer or endometrial cancer (with any ongoing cancer treatment)
  • must have been diagnosed or received cancer-related treatment within the last 3 years
  • must have approval from primary treating physician
  • must be able to read and write in English
  • must not have used Nordic walking polls on a regular basis within the last 6 months
If you have any questions or are interested in participating in the study please contact Elise Cunningham by email at elise.cunningham@uoit.ca or by phone at 905-721-8668 ext. 5329.
